Chapter 9
Wyatt walked towards the study where heâd seen both Owen and Maggie headed. Their voices carried through the door, as did Violaâs, who was arguing with them. He turned to go back to the living room to watch the game with Gabbyâs brothers when he heard her name tossed out. He stopped and listened, hoping heâd discover something about his wife that he could use to his advantage.
âI swear you two doted on Gabby from the second she was born,â Viola raged. âIâm sick of being the one left out, the one whoâs overlooked because precious Gabby needs attention. Thatâs all sheâs ever had. From Sam and Nate, from the teachers at school because she was so special and brilliant, from the boys I dated. Do you know how many of them admitted to me, to me, that the only reason they came back for a second date was to see my sister? Do you know how it feels to find out your sister is suddenly getting married to the catch of the town and have to stand by seeing her get everything sheâs always wanted? And you two are the worst. Youâve never punished her a day in her life. Remember the night she didnât bother coming home? She was about seventeen, and you two just let it roll off as if it was nothing. Oh, she played it as though sheâd fallen asleep at a friendâs house but come on that is the dumbest excuse ever. If Iâd done something like that I would have been grounded for a month.â
âAlright maybe we were a bit easier on Gabby than the rest of you, but there was a four-year difference between you,â Maggie stated trying to calm her daughter down.
âI know I was the baby for four years until you brought home the odd duck,â Viola said.
âDonât take that flippant tone with us Viola, you may be nearly thirty-two years old but I can still wash your mouth out with soap,â Maggie said sternly.
âSee, youâd never say something like that to Gabby.â
âViola, sit down,â Owen told her. âYouâre right, we were different with Gabby, and maybe itâs time we help you understand why.â
âOwen, no,â Maggie said. âWe promised that we wouldnât tell anyone before Gabrielle and right now is not the time to tell her.â
âWould one of you please explain this to me? Why all the concern about Gabby? Dad I get it, sheâs your precious little baby girl, but guess what Iâm your daughter too. You used to bring home presents for us for no reason and they were usually pretty cool but the ones you got for Gabby were awesome, though she didnât appreciate half of them, so why did you put her on some pedestal and refuse to take her off?â
âMaggie, I know we said weâd tell Gabrielle first but as you said sheâs got enough going on right now, between me and the baby, we canât put any more stress on her. Viola, if
